Exhibition "The Traditions of the Ancient Novelty"

Exhibits from the funds of the National Art Museum of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) will be able to see visitors to the Irkutsk Art Museum. V.P. Sukachev. The exhibition “The Traditions of the Ancient Novelties” is part of the “Rare Books of Yakutia” project, which is aimed at strengthening a single cultural space and inter-museum ties, drawing public attention to the problem of preserving and popularizing the artistic heritage of the peoples of the North.

The public will be presented the works of authors who in their work turn to the aesthetics of folk art. Images associated with cattle breeding cults, pagan beliefs and mythology are reflected not only in folklore, but also in the decoration of things. In their works of decorative art, artists often use signs of the sun, fertility, the tree of life, plant motifs. At the exhibition you can see various women’s jewelry - pendants, earrings, bracelets, belts. When creating them, nickel silver, velvet, and beads were used, in particular.

A special place in the exposition will be occupied by the Yakut bone carving. At the exhibition, it will be represented mainly by small plastic. The work of bone cutters from a mammoth tusk is distinguished by semantic layering, preserve the motives of folk culture.

Also at the exhibition you can see the Yakut graphics created in the forties and sixties of the last century. Some of these works are dedicated to the national heroic epic. The authors refer to such symbols as Native Land, Fire, Serge (Konovyaz). This language of fine metaphors and symbolism is so expressive that it will be interesting and understandable to the viewer who is not familiar with the Yakut traditions and culture.
