Exhibition of unique photographs "New Earth. From the Rose Glacier to Abrosimov Bay"

Gallery of Classical Photography, Wanderers Photographers’ Association and the Institute of Oceanology P.P. Shirshov of the Russian Academy of Sciences present the first photo exhibition on the unique archipelago of the Russian Arctic “New Earth. From the Rose Glacier to Abrosimov Bay. ”

The exhibition is dedicated to the unique nature of the Arctic New Earth archipelago. It contains photographs taken by the head of sea expeditions Mikhail Flint, photographers Yaroslav Amelin and Vladimir Onopko. On a research vessel of the Institute of Oceanology of the Russian Academy of Sciences “Academician Mstislav Keldysh”, the authors sailed along the eastern coast of Novaya Zemlya and visited places inaccessible to humans. In the photographs taken by them, viewers will see this distant northern land as it appeared before the eyes of the discoverers over 500 years ago.

New Earth. Northern continuation of the Ural Range in the sea. One of the most beautiful archipelagos of the Russian Arctic, separating the Barents Sea from the Siberian Arctic seas. Covered with lifeless glaciers in the north and tundra in the south, hospitable for those who come to its bays from the stormy Arctic sea, harsh and cold for those who are forced to stay there for a long time.

People have been exploring the Arctic since the 16th century, but it still remains one of the most mysterious and inaccessible regions of our planet. More than 2,000 people annually climb Mount Everest, more recently inaccessible to mere mortals. This is more than it has been on the eastern coast of Novaya Zemlya in the entire 500-year history of exploration of this archipelago.

More than 80 landscapes presented at the exhibition will tell you about how incredibly beautiful the shores of this inaccessible northern land are: in fog, under low gray clouds, when nature seems frozen in its cold calm, and in rare sundials, when colors appear from nowhere - glaciers shine with diamonds, lichens on black stones are painted with gold, and the sea, reflecting the sky and ice, becomes blue and turquoise.

“From the point of view of creative photography, the authors paid special attention to conveying the mood in the landscape, using muted colors that are so characteristic of these places in cloudy weather, as opposed to the overly saturated colors and unnatural contrast that are popular with the work of modern photographers. It is the creative rethinking of the New Earth through the landscape that is the main goal of this exhibition, ”says one of its authors, Yaroslav Amelin.

Exhibition “New Earth. From Rose Glacier to Abrosimova Bay ”is held from October 26 to November 13.
