The anniversary exhibition of Dmitry Sandzhiev in the halls of the Russian Academy of Arts

Prechistenka, 21 , the opening of the anniversary exhibition of the works of the national artist of the Russian Federation, full member of the Russian Academy of Arts Dmitry N. Sandzhiev. The exhibition is dedicated to the 65th anniversary of the master.

The exhibition provides an opportunity to get acquainted with the multifaceted, deeply original work of a famous Russian artist. The exposition includes over 100 works of painting and graphics, many of which have been completed in recent years.

The universal talent of Sandzhiev, manifested in various areas of graphics - from detailed thematic cycles to book illustrations, was embodied with no less force in the field of painting. Over the years, he has been working on a large-scale art project “Myths of the Planet”, which arose as a result of travels in Mexico, Egypt, India and other countries of the world - the carriers of ancient civilizations.

In the plots of the artist’s paintings (“Bathing in Time”, “Ancestress of Eve”, “Birth of Aphrodite”, “Minotaur”) you can find echoes of many world myths, legends, and legends. This is the author’s perception of that mysterious world that existed in the past. The artist appears as an interpreter of the heritage of world culture, passed "through himself." Myths of different times and peoples freely overlap in the works of Sandzhiev, without contradicting each other, on the contrary, revealing their innermost meaning more fully.

Dmitry Sandzhiev was born in 1949 in Novosibirsk. He graduated from the Yaroslavl Art College, in 1981 - MGHI im. V.I.Surikova, then Creative workshops of the USSR Academy of Arts under the direction of O.G. Vereisky. Six sheets from his thesis “The Shepherd’s Widow” were acquired by the State Tretyakov Gallery, the remaining three were included in the collection of the famous company “Faber-Kastel” (Germany), which awarded the author with a special prize. Through the specific fate of the Kalmyk woman, the fate of an entire nation with a special way of life and traditions can be traced. In plastically expressive sheets, each specific plot acquires the character of a deep generalization, of the poeticized “picture-memory”.

Sandzhiev’s grandiose art project “Ancient Civilizations”, marked by deep associativity of images, conceptualizes the path of the last millennia passed by mankind.

D. Sandzhiev is a master endowed with a rare ability to see in the ordinary - supernatural, in the festive - incredible, in real - fantastic. Masterfully executed paintings and graphic works of the author allow you to take a fresh look at the most ordinary situations of everyday life. The line and stroke, the combination of black and white create a spiritual atmosphere in its graphic sheets. The image is perceived as luminiferous. Black and white graphics takes on the features of unique picturesqueness.

The cycle of drawings "Dreams" is filled with mysterious mystery. Compositions are filled with numerous details that give them a special expression and dynamics. A sharp, sometimes unexpected change of scale makes the images and objects important for the plot significant, growing to universal proportions.

The graphics in the artist’s work harmoniously exist with the painting - bright, unpredictable, fantastic. Bizarre ornamental design, sophisticated symbolism of color give his work a sharp decorative and pictorial sophistication.

Sandzhiev’s works transform our consciousness. He follows the original path, without copying his predecessors, creating a new world on his canvases and graphic sheets. In his attitude, nature and city, East and West intertwined. Dynamic drawings and powerful color paintings of the artist have powerful energy that draws the viewer into an imaginary, newly created world, contrary to traditional ideas and knowledge.

During his creative life, D.N. Sandzhiev took part in more than 170 exhibitions in Russia and abroad, was a member of and headed the jury of significant international competitions.

In 2002, the picturesque polyptych “Broken Time”, dedicated to the anniversary of the tragic events of September 11, 2001, was presented to the US Congress.

In 2009, the artist donated 35 works as a gift to the city of Kemerovo and was awarded the medal “For Faith and Good” by the Governor of the Kemerovo Region for active charitable and social activities.

The permanent exhibition of the Central Chess Palace in City Chess (Kalmykia) and the Art Museum of the Republic contain 4 paintings and more than 20 graphic sheets donated by D. Sandzhiev. In 2009, he was awarded the medal “Forever Together” in memory of the 400th anniversary of the entry of the Kalmyk people into the Russian state.

The works of D. Sandzhiev are in the collections of the State Tretyakov Gallery, the State Russian Museum, the State Museum of the East, the Metropolitan Museum of Art (USA), the world-famous collection of Ludwig (Germany) and other museums and private collections in Russia and abroad.
