При сравнении с остальными работами Монтичелли складывается впечатление, что этот чудесный портрет создал другой художник, писавший в совершенно иной манере.

The woman’s attire is elaborate. She wears a gown of pale blue or grey silk, heavily draped and gathered to create voluminous sleeves that puff out from the shoulders. The fabric appears translucent in places, revealing glimpses of the underlayers and contributing to a sense of luxuriousness. Intricate embroidery adorns the neckline and cuffs, suggesting considerable wealth and status. A fan is held delicately in her left hand, its surface partially obscured by the folds of her sleeve. Jewelry – a bracelet on her wrist and what appears to be a necklace – further emphasizes her position within a privileged social stratum.
The artist has employed a technique that prioritizes soft edges and subtle gradations of light and shadow. The skin tones are rendered with remarkable delicacy, capturing a sense of both smoothness and underlying structure. Light falls primarily from the left, illuminating one side of her face and highlighting the contours of her features. This creates a play of light and dark that adds depth and dimension to the portrait.
Beyond the straightforward depiction of a wealthy woman, several subtexts emerge. The direct gaze suggests confidence and perhaps even a degree of self-awareness. However, there is also an element of restraint in her expression; she does not offer a broad smile or overtly engaging demeanor. This could be interpreted as indicative of social decorum or a more complex psychological state. The dark background, while visually striking, contributes to a sense of isolation and perhaps even melancholy. It suggests that the woman’s world is one of privilege but also potentially of solitude. The landscape glimpsed in the distance hints at a broader existence beyond her immediate surroundings, yet remains inaccessible. Overall, the painting conveys an impression of refined elegance combined with a quiet introspection.
