CELLULOID CLOWNS
…And all my life they played with me –
They wont let go, no matter how much you beg.
Tell me, how important are details in fate -
My celluloid clowns.
Tell me, what coffee smells like in the morning
In that Greek cafe I never visited.
How a thought of catastrophe
Pierces a poor mind – where can you go, narwhal?
But that herbarium of memories
Couldnt erase all the events.
I lived for nothing, chasing illusions –
My celluloid clowns.
And – seize the moment! – I enjoyed it so much…
Now just sit there, drink vodka and sigh.
I repeat – something was there after all –
My celluloid clowns.
In reality, nothing ever happened,
And it never will – no matter how much you beg.
You cant save your heart from this mess –
My celluloid clowns.
You cannot comment Why?
The background is divided into distinct zones. A pale blue expanse dominates the upper portion, while a stark white plane occupies the lower area, abruptly meeting the black void at the edges of the canvas. Scattered across this backdrop are organic shapes – what appear to be decaying fruit or foliage – rendered in muted browns and yellows. These elements float seemingly without gravity, contributing to the overall sense of unreality.
The color palette is restricted but impactful: a combination of reds, blacks, whites, and greys, with touches of gold. The red of the coat and boots provides a focal point, drawing the eye while simultaneously evoking associations with power or perhaps theatricality. The stark contrast between the bright colors and the dark background amplifies the sense of isolation and unease.
The painting’s subtexts are complex and open to interpretation. The historical costume suggests an exploration of identity, tradition, and potentially a critique of societal roles. The incongruous face hints at a fractured self or a questioning of authenticity. The decaying organic matter could symbolize decay, loss, or the passage of time. The stark, isolated setting reinforces a feeling of alienation and introspection. Overall, the work seems to explore themes of identity, history, and the fragility of existence within a surreal and unsettling context.
