THE PRICE OF THE IDEAL
He stepped out of the workshop and stretched languidly, savoring the aftertaste. He stood on the balcony, gazing at the sparkling, granular snow, a dazzling blue-white; and then – she appeared – slender, fleeting, magnificent. He rushed down the stairs and called for a cab. Quickly! After her! The runners of the sleigh creaked merrily as enormous, multi-colored houses blurred past his eyes. A madman howled, shaking his dirty beard. The speed was breathtaking. She, that girl, that beautiful unknown woman, turned into one alley, then another, half-blocked by logs, and suddenly – into a courtyard. Stop! he shouted to the coachman, tossed him a coin, and rushed after her. A black-and-white well-turned graveyard, a labyrinth of fears, blind walls of houses, and – a bonfire, like a fiery cry of pain, and – a low yellow window, and behind it – laundry women – stout, powerful, the noise of washing, steam... And – the endless fear of courtyards.
Here is the price of the ideal.

Here we see several figures actively involved in washing clothes; their postures suggest repetitive, physically demanding work. The women are dressed simply, with garments that appear worn and functional. Their faces are largely obscured by shadow or turned away from the viewer, which diminishes individual identity and reinforces a collective portrayal of working-class life. A young girl stands slightly apart from the group, her gaze directed towards the light source, perhaps symbolizing hope or aspiration beyond their immediate circumstances.
The artist has employed a loose, expressive brushstroke throughout, particularly noticeable in the rendering of fabrics and textures. This technique lends a sense of immediacy to the scene, conveying not just the visual appearance but also the tactile quality of the materials being handled. The arrangement of the wooden tubs and scattered laundry creates a dynamic interplay of shapes and forms within the limited space.
Subtly embedded within this depiction is an exploration of social conditions. The cramped setting, the women’s attire, and their weary postures allude to poverty and hardship. While the light offers a visual respite, it also highlights the stark reality of their existence. Its possible that the artist intended to evoke empathy for these laborers, prompting reflection on the often-overlooked lives of those performing essential but undervalued tasks. The absence of overt sentimentality allows for a more nuanced understanding of the scene’s underlying social commentary.
