Картина оставляет впечатление незавершённости. Набросок к варианту, где утопленница полностью обута? Или художник решил переписать картину, но не довёл задуманное до конца?

The subtexts of the painting likely revolve around themes of death, mystery, and perhaps social commentary. The title Drowned Woman strongly suggests suicide or an accidental drowning, but the presence of the uniformed man could imply a crime has been committed. His pensive posture and the handgun might suggest he is investigating her death or perhaps contemplating his own role in the events. The womans vulnerable and seemingly abandoned state on the cold ground evokes pity and raises questions about her life and circumstances. The bleak, wintry landscape amplifies the sense of desolation and finality associated with death. The painting could be interpreted as a commentary on the harsh realities of life for certain individuals, possibly women, in the society of its time, where they might face desperate situations leading to tragic ends. The stark contrast between the lifeless woman and the observant, yet detached, figure of the officer underscores the indifference of authority or society towards individual suffering.
