GENTLE INDIFFERENCE OF THE WORLD
1.
Snowdrifts gleam gently,
Lights on the other shore.
The river is encased in ice. The ice can be
Enormous, just like days often are.
A car travels along the road,
How brightly the town sparkles,
So terribly small, so wretched?
Where, it seems to me, everyone is alone…
Oh, gentle indifference
Of the worlds vastness! And when
You become obedient to this,
You will understand – trouble isnt so terrible.
2.
Lights tremble, flow, sparkle,
They shimmer and flow.
What do the lights of houses promise?
I myself dont know...comfort?
Snow all around in frozen foam.
And a dark summer cottage island.
In this provincial universe
You are buried, alone.
You sit in a taxi and drive to your destination,
And the city lights tremble.
They will disappear into nowhere,
Just like night comes – just like days.
3.
If you walk, the road creaks,
The car doesnt creak on the road.
White snow, and there is so much of it -
Blinding under the headlights.
4.
You dont see churches in the darkness,
You clearly remember the city outskirts.
Because every day you accumulate experience –
For what? Known to someone higher.
5.
The city stretches low like a strip,
It lasts over the great river.
Life in it has become stale, and besides,
Dont joke with such life, friend.
The city flies by from the window,
Darkness is cut through by lights.
Soon there will be a bridge. And that life is one –
Seems like reality is joking with us.
6.
In the river, in summer they caught sandfish,
Perch and pike perch – now its all white:
The ice is tightly frozen, and fishermen
Will not be greeted. It doesnt know how.
And the city flies by, and then
A bridge will appear, and the city will become reality,
So that you – lost in a complex, dark theme –
Are surrendered to everyday powerlessness.
You cannot comment Why?
Beyond this darker area, a body of water stretches towards the horizon. The surface is depicted with lighter tones and more fluid brushwork, conveying a sense of stillness and expanse. A single sailboat appears on the waters surface, positioned centrally but relatively small in scale; it serves as a focal point within the vastness of the scene.
A range of hills or mountains forms the backdrop, their shapes suggested through subtle gradations of tone. These distant features are softened, contributing to an overall feeling of depth and distance. The sky is rendered with broad washes, creating a sense of atmospheric perspective.
The artist’s technique emphasizes spontaneity and immediacy. The visible brushstrokes and fluid application of ink or watercolor suggest a rapid execution, prioritizing the capture of a fleeting impression rather than meticulous representation. This approach lends the scene an air of quiet contemplation and evokes a mood of solitude.
Subtly, there is a sense of melancholy present in the work. The monochromatic palette contributes to this feeling, as does the solitary sailboat on the water. It could be interpreted as a reflection on the passage of time or the insignificance of human endeavors against the backdrop of natures grandeur. The absence of figures other than the implied presence of the boat’s occupant reinforces this sense of isolation and introspection.
