A lovely little girl...
A beautiful portrait, but it doesnt look much like Mashka at all.
Makovskaya paints portraits well and accurately captures the subjects appearance, which means she looked like that in her childhood.

The girl cradles a small monkey in her arms, its presence introducing an element of playful contrast to the aristocratic setting. The animal’s gaze is directed outward, seemingly engaging with something beyond the frame, while the girls expression appears somewhat detached, almost contemplative. This juxtaposition hints at a potential commentary on the relationship between humanity and nature, or perhaps a symbolic representation of childhood innocence alongside exoticism.
The chair itself is richly decorated, its upholstery patterned in deep reds and golds, further emphasizing the subject’s privileged status. The background is rendered in muted greens and browns, suggesting an outdoor setting – perhaps a garden or park – though it remains indistinct, serving primarily to isolate the figure and draw attention to her presence.
The lighting is soft and diffused, highlighting the textures of the fabrics and the girls skin while minimizing harsh shadows. This contributes to the overall impression of gentility and refinement. The artist’s brushwork appears loose and expressive, particularly in the rendering of the background foliage, lending a sense of spontaneity to the composition.
Subtly, there is an air of melancholy present. While the scene conveys luxury and privilege, the girls expression lacks overt joy; it suggests a certain quietness or introspection that transcends her apparent circumstances. The monkey’s presence might be interpreted as a symbol of companionship in a world of formality, or perhaps even a reflection of the subject’s own sense of being an outsider within her privileged sphere.
