To begin with, it is worth noting that Vasily Andreevich Tropinin executed a number of genre-portrait works. In these paintings he found something subtle and unusual among the ordinary inhabitants, unremarkable in any way, who are the main segment of any city. In this case, the artist’s eye was drawn to an ordinary seamstress. The work entitled "Goldsmith" is a typical representative of the portrait genre.
Description of Vasily Tropinin’s painting "The Goldsmith.
At work perfectly visible, all the smallest nuances and details, which are drawn by the artist very well and carefully.
So skillfully performed the work that you can see not only all the details of the girl’s clothes, but even every curl on her desk. Thanks to this, just unimaginably realistic look takes the red shawl, which is thrown over the shoulders of a girl, along with a gold ornament, which is embroidered by a girl. The master makes an accent, on all the working details and the girl’s table.
Along with such high-quality and amazingly thorough detailing, Tropinin does not neglect the drawing of the girl’s appearance. It is noticeable that the artist is drawn to very juicy and bright color solutions, actively playing with the palette of colors, light, and shadow, thanks to which it turns out to literally revive not only the girl’s image, but also the entire picture.
It can be seen that the model is a typical girl, who is not ready for portrait performances, but thanks to the masterful brushwork of the artist, no one will believe that this is a real model, who by her whole posture indicates that she works as a seamstress.
In fact, thanks to this, realism was achieved in all such works by Tropinin. The painting strikes with its sincerity and pristine beauty, which is especially emphasized by the depth of the eyes of the girl who is at her workplace.

This is a portrait of a young woman engrossed in gold embroidery. The painting, titled Gold Embroidery, depicts her seated, with her head turned to look directly at the viewer. She has dark hair styled up with curls framing her face and wears a simple grey dress with a vibrant red scarf draped around her neck and shoulders. Her gaze is direct and engaging, with a slight smile hinting at her focus.
Her hands are delicately positioned, one holding a needle threaded with gold, poised above a piece of fabric stretched on an embroidery frame. The fabric itself is adorned with an intricate, ornate gold pattern, suggesting the luxurious nature of the craft. Beside the frame, a small worktable is laid out with embroidery tools, including scissors, a wooden tool with holes, and spools of thread.
The subtext of the painting likely speaks to several themes:
