Polenovskys courtyard. I have seen it many times from the window of a place where modernity should have triumphed, but alas, it didnt. Polenovskys courtyard is beautiful. Life here is peaceful and pleasant, and there is no expectation of the future.
A neat dovecote
The view in the courtyard pleases me so.
Im fully aware that childhood is gone forever.
I understand, I understand,
Repeating as I walk by
The dovecote that someone built;
Its a shame it wasnt me, but like a child,
I rejoice because I see
The dovecote – as if they gave me a visa back to childhood again,
And theres no denying that.
A neat dovecote.
This view in the courtyard appeals to me.
I have fully accepted that childhood is gone forever.
Ive understood, Ive understood,
Repeating as I pass by
The dovecote that was built,
Its a pity I didnt build it, but as a child,
I am happy because I see
The dovecote – its like Im given a visa
Back to childhood, and there is no denying that.

I like the color of the sky.
So many associations and deeply felt emotions! Im very fond of this painting. It reminds me of childhood, my backyard, warmth... Those worn paths, the grass. It evokes a sense of sadness, tenderness, truthfulness; you want to step right into it... Thank you!
Im reminded of this painting from childhood. A reproduction of it was in the home of my dear friend, Lialka Naroditskaya. And our childhood courtyard is somewhat similar to Polenovs courtyard. When I look at it, I feel a slight sadness. This painting is one of my favorites.
When Moscow Courtyard was first exhibited, all the other artists sketches and landscapes seemed dull in comparison; this small but profound painting contained so much light, air, vitality, and truth... – recalled V. N. Polenovs student, Baksheev.

The middle ground reveals a collection of simple, wooden houses and outbuildings with green roofs, characteristic of rural Russian architecture. Chickens peck at the ground near a barn, adding a touch of domestic life. A woman in a traditional headscarf stands near a doorstep, her posture suggesting a mundane chore or a moment of repose.
In the background, the majestic white churches with golden onion domes rise above the rooftops, their spires piercing the clear blue sky dotted with fluffy white clouds. These churches are a prominent feature, signifying the spiritual heart of the community and providing a visual counterpoint to the humble dwellings. The overall impression is one of tranquility, simplicity, and a deep connection to nature and tradition.
The subtexts of the painting lie in its subtle portrayal of Russian life and its inherent beauty. Levitan captures the essence of provincial quietude, where the rhythm of daily life unfolds unhurriedly. The presence of the children and animals suggests innocence, natural growth, and continuity. The imposing churches, while part of the landscape, also allude to faith and the enduring spiritual heritage of Russia. The painting can be interpreted as a nostalgic look at a vanishing way of life, celebrating the simple joys and profound beauty found in everyday scenes. It evokes a sense of peace and contemplation, inviting the viewer to appreciate the subtle charm of ordinary existence.
