Painter: Ivan Ivanovich Shishkin
Location: The State Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow (Государственная Третьяковская галерея).
Painted in 1891, during Shishkin’s creative prime, Rain in an Oak Forest is elaborate and is probably one of the author’s most impeccable, stunning works and resembles a quality photograph. The canvas depicts an oak grove, through which many people pass through the path. It is a warm summer rain, and the air in the forest is fresh and cool. A man and a woman, a married couple, are strolling leisurely under an umbrella, and a little ahead of them is a man, most likely the author of the painting, who, feeling the drops of rain on himself, opens the umbrella.
Description of Ivan Shishkin’s painting "Rain in an Oak Forest".
Accuracy in details, traditional for the artist’s landscapes, reaches the highest level in this painting: the entire depth of the grove space is conveyed to the maximum extent possible through the difference between clear-cut trees in front of us and blurred trees in the background, which lose color as they move deeper into the grove and merge with the silvery gray mist.
The rain is summer, mushrooming. We draw this conclusion from the richness of the colors in the tree foliage and grass. If you look closely you can see how a ray of sunlight breaks through the rainy veil and lights up every pebble and blade of grass, is reflected by rays in puddles and creates golden halos on tree trunks in the distance, and close up - small highlights on every leaf on which it hits.
In contrast to the somewhat harsh paintings that Shishkin painted in the last years of his life, in "Rain in the Oak Forest" he enjoys all the variety and beauty of the world around him and invites the viewer to dive into this summer landscape, forgetting about all the problems and hardships of life. All this lightness and charm of the picture is achieved by great skill of its author. In it he revealed all his creative potential, masterly conveying all the subtleties, the play of light and shadow, as well as the whole palette of shades of the summer grove during the rain.

Класс!!!
In my opinion, the figures of people give wholeness to the composition. The human mind immediately grasps these figures and focuses attention in space and perspective. However, a small tree near a stone and a puddle has an effect on the subconscious, invisibly affecting the viewer and creating a strong sense of presence.
Its a very interesting painting; I remember seeing it above my bed since childhood. It was actually a reproduction.
Super Duper
A truly remarkable piece! It evokes a sense of rain and a park. This is impressionism at its finest! Its a shame the reproduction is so poor.
супер
I have a perfect replica of the painting that is over 100 years old. I am selling it. There is confirmation for the painting (it has been authenticated)! The painting has been passed down through generations, and now its in my possession. Call me at 8-937-823-71-17.
Okay, Im looking for an inexpensive reproduction print in Lipetsk. If you have one available, please send me your phone number so I can call you.
Written in 1891, during the peak of Shishkins creative period, the painting Rain in an Oak Forest is meticulously crafted and perhaps one of the most flawless and stunning works by the artist, resembling a high-quality photograph.
The canvas depicts an oak grove through which a path worn by many people passes. It is a warm summer rain, and the air in the forest becomes fresh and cool. Under an umbrella, a man and a woman – a married couple – stroll leisurely, while a man walks slightly ahead; he is likely the artist himself, who, feeling the raindrops on him, opens his umbrella. The traditional accuracy of detail characteristic of the artists landscapes reaches its highest level in this painting: the entire depth of the grove is conveyed through the difference between the clear trees in front and the blurred ones in the background, which lose color as they recede into the depths of the forest, merging with the silvery-gray haze.
It is a summer rain, conducive to mushroom picking. We draw this conclusion based on the richness of colors in the foliage of the trees and grass. If you look closely, you can see how a sunbeam breaks through the rainy veil and illuminates every pebble and blade of grass, reflecting in rays in puddles and creating golden halos around the trunks of distant trees, while nearby – small glimmers on every leaf that it touches.
Unlike some of the more somber paintings that Shishkin created in the later years of his life, in Rain in an Oak Forest, he revels in all the variety and beauty of the world around him and invites the viewer to immerse themselves in this summer landscape, forgetting about all the problems and troubles of life. All this lightness and charm of the painting are achieved through the immense skill of its author. In it, he revealed his full creative potential, virtuously conveying all the nuances, play of light and shadow, as well as the entire palette of shades of a summer grove during rain.

I also have a reproduction. How can I determine if its an original or a fake by another artist? And how much would it be worth?
You cannot comment Why?
The painting depicts a serene and atmospheric forest scene during a light rain. Towering oak trees with dense green foliage dominate the composition, their trunks casting long shadows on the mossy ground. A path, still damp from the rain, meanders through the trees, reflecting the muted light.
In the foreground, two figures huddle under a dark umbrella, walking away from the viewer on the path. Their closeness and shared umbrella suggest intimacy and companionship, seeking refuge from the elements together. Further in the distance, a solitary figure walks in the opposite direction, their posture suggesting introspection or perhaps a determined stride.
The subtexts of the painting can be interpreted in several ways:
Overall, Rain in the Oak Forest evokes a mood of quietude, natural beauty, and thoughtful reflection on the human experience within the larger context of the landscape.
