The painting is simply amazing, but its not the one I was looking for. Basically, theres violence and shooting in it, but I still didnt understand the meaning of the painting.
Ladies and gentlemen, please note the dimensions of the painting. This was a commissioned piece for which 1600 florins (gold coins) were paid. A florin weighed 3.53 grams of gold, which is equivalent to 5,648 grams or 5.648 kilograms of gold. Impressive, isnt it?
Its impressive :) Considering that at the time there were no cars, any kind of machinery, or other modern conveniences, this was a considerable fortune that could sustain someone for their entire life with moderate use. The price is equivalent to selling a Renault today for 10 million euros.
The painting depicts a lively scene of a militia company preparing to march out. At the forefront, Captain Frans Banninck Cocq, dressed in black and red attire, gestures forward with his left hand, while his lieutenant, Willem van Ruytenburch, stands to his right in a striking yellow and white uniform. The composition is filled with various individuals, some holding muskets, spears, and a drum. A young girl, bathed in a golden light, stands out amidst the group, holding a dead chicken and a powder horn. The background is dark and shadowed, with hints of architectural elements and diagonal shafts of light, creating a dramatic and dynamic atmosphere. The painting, despite its common name The Night Watch, is actually set during the day, with the darker tones and dramatic lighting contributing to its famous moniker. The central figures are highlighted, drawing the viewers eye, while others are partially obscured, suggesting a moment of spontaneous action rather than a posed portrait. The inclusion of the young girl, often interpreted as a mascot or allegorical figure, is a unique element that adds layers of symbolism, possibly representing the company or the city it defends. The overall effect is one of energy, movement, and civic pride, characteristic of Dutch Golden Age group portraits.
