You are great, Christ, and I am so small.
How can I even begin to represent you?
How will I understand all that you have commanded?
How can I glorify you when I am so insignificant?
And for those who do not have you,
Something so important to me will be taken away...
How much heavenly fire is within me?
A mere reflection? Or even abandoned by it?
You are great, Christ, but how am I supposed to grow?
I stumble blindly, I dont know the way.
To prolong your path in this reality
Is impossible; I understand that.
Should I give everything away and follow you?
The depths of materiality cannot
Provide support for this journey.
And every morning, Im used to having yogurt.
You are great, Christ, and I am so small.
Are my attempts even worthwhile?
I have lived over forty years and still havent understood...
And my life hangs by a thread.
"ты поверил, потому что увидел Меня; блаженны невидевшие и уверовавшие. "
(Ин. 20:19-29)

Surrounding them are other apostles, captured in various states of reaction. Some appear amazed, others expectant, and a few are turned away, lost in their own thoughts or prayers. The use of chiaroscuro, a technique of strong contrasts between light and dark, intensifies the spiritual and emotional tension of the moment. The darkness of the background isolates the figures, drawing the viewers attention to the central act of faith.
The subtexts of the painting explore themes of faith, doubt, and divine revelation. Thomass initial skepticism is a relatable human experience, and his journey to believing through physical confirmation highlights the struggle between empirical evidence and spiritual conviction. Jesus open gesture of vulnerability, offering his wound for inspection, signifies his compassion and willingness to satisfy the needs of his followers. The painting can also be interpreted as a meditation on the nature of belief, suggesting that true faith often arises from overcoming doubt. The diverse reactions of the apostles around them emphasize that faith is a personal journey, experienced differently by each individual. Ultimately, the painting is a powerful portrayal of a pivotal moment in Christian narrative, celebrating the transformation of doubt into unwavering faith.
