THE RETURN OF THE PRODIGAL SON
The mossy stones of joy
Are thrown into the waters of the past.
There will be no more rainbows.
No more drunken revelry,
No more boisterous times.
The father awaits his son,
Its best to leave the past untouched.
Money will run out – it is clear,
There will be no friends…And that’s not needed.
The road has been long and dusty
For this spiritual garden.
A return home, from which
He wandered into nowhere and luxury.
If only he could hear a wise word –
Then life would be good.
I became acquainted with the works of Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn in Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, at the Bogdan and Varvara Khanenko Museum of Western and Eastern Art.

The scene is set in a dimly lit interior, with shadows playing a significant role in creating a sense of intimacy and introspection. Behind the central figures, other individuals are visible, observing the reunion. To the right, a man in a red robe with a turban-like headdress stands stoically, his hands clasped. Behind him, a younger figure in a dark tunic and hat is seated, his gaze directed towards the embraced pair. In the background, two other figures are dimly discernible in the darkness, their faces shadowed and their presence adding to the overall atmosphere of solemnity.
The subtext of the painting is rich and multifaceted. Primarily, it is a powerful illustration of the biblical parable of the Prodigal Son, emphasizing themes of forgiveness, unconditional love, and redemption. The fathers gesture is one of ultimate acceptance, welcoming back his wayward son regardless of his past transgressions. The sons posture of submission and his dilapidated state convey his remorse and the hardship he has endured.
Beyond the literal narrative, the painting can be interpreted to represent the human condition. The fathers embrace can symbolize divine grace or the unconditional love of a parent. The sons return represents the journey of a soul seeking forgiveness and reconciliation, the acknowledgment of mistakes, and the desire for a fresh start. The other figures in the painting might represent different reactions to this act of forgiveness – perhaps judgment, contemplation, or quiet empathy. The use of light and shadow further enhances the emotional depth, highlighting the tender moment of reunion while shrouding the rest of the scene in a contemplative darkness, inviting the viewer to reflect on their own journeys of error, repentance, and acceptance.
