This painting, Family Group in a Landscape from 1648, depicts a large family gathered outdoors. In the foreground, several children are arranged, with a young girl in a red dress to the left holding a basket and looking out at the viewer. Next to her, a toddler is being held by a woman, possibly the mother, who is also attended by a boy.
Further back, a man in a dark hat and attire, appearing to be the patriarch, stands with a distinctive white collar. He is flanked by two women, one of whom holds a baby, and another older woman with a prominent ruff collar. Behind them, another child can be seen. The family members are dressed in the fashion of the mid-17th century.
The background features a muted, somewhat dramatic sky with clouds, suggesting a natural, perhaps rural setting. In the distance, a landscape is visible with rolling hills and what appear to be cattle.
