According to the duel rules, there should be 4+5 steps. And judging by both pistols being drawn, Onegins shot should have already been fired.
Clearly, this painting was not a success for the artist. As Nabokov wrote: The most inept painting by an inept Repin, depicting a forty-year-old Onegin aiming at the curly-haired Sobinov. (Sobinov was an opera singer).
Ну не повторяйте вы глупости за бездарным графоманом.
Помню дуэль с ЛенскИм как вчера...

The subtext of the painting is rich and evokes themes of honor, pride, and the tragic consequences of societal pressures and personal animosity. The stark, cold winter landscape mirrors the emotional frigidity and the grim nature of the duel. The act of dueling itself, a practice rooted in a code of honor, is portrayed as a ritualistic and ultimately destructive confrontation. The painting captures a pivotal moment charged with anticipation, highlighting the vanity and perhaps senselessness of such a conflict that is about to result in death or serious injury, reflecting the Romantic eras fascination with intense emotions and dramatic events.
