Among the many portraits by I. E. Repin, one of the most remarkable is the portrait of P. M. Tretyakov, the founder of the gallery of Russian art, which later became a true national treasure.
Tretyakov, who deeply respected and appreciated Repins work, acquired many of his paintings. Repin, in turn, deeply valued the collectors tireless efforts. The correspondence between the art collector and the artist, which lasted for twenty-five years, testifies to their mutual affection and interest in each other.
