Its all whimsical, but with its own language -
Horses race towards the sky, something in a chalice,
The old man is sad – everything is known.
Cadmium splashes, nearby theres a shimmer of jasper.
The festive painting is very beautiful.
The horses race on, and Phaeton is overthrown.
Bright flowers – spring has passed.
But the colors of the paintings will not fade.
You cannot comment Why?
The horses are rendered with considerable energy; their forms appear almost blurred due to the implied speed of their motion. Their coloration blends into the overall palette, creating a sense of unity within the group. The artist has employed a loose and expressive brushstroke throughout, contributing to an ethereal quality.
Above the figures, a swirling sky occupies a significant portion of the canvas. It is characterized by a blend of blues, yellows, and whites, suggesting either dawn or dusk – a transitional moment in time. This atmospheric backdrop obscures any clear horizon line, further emphasizing the sense of boundless space and movement.
The lower portion of the painting is rendered in darker, earthier tones – predominantly reds and browns – which create a visual base for the scene above. The lack of distinct detail in this area contributes to an impression of depth and distance.
Subtextually, the work evokes themes of power, control, and perhaps even hubris. The figure’s small stature within the context of the powerful horses suggests a complex relationship between humanity and nature or divine forces. The rapid movement implies a journey – a progression through time or experience – while the indistinct setting hints at an uncertain future. The overall effect is one of fleeting beauty and overwhelming scale, inviting contemplation on themes of human ambition and the vastness of existence.
