The composition is enriched by elements suggesting a Chinoiserie theme, a fashionable European interpretation of East Asian aesthetics. Lush foliage and flowering plants frame the central figures, and a delicate pink parasol adds a pop of color. In the background, a pagoda-like structure stands, within which another solitary figure can be seen. A fishing rod extends across the upper portion of the painting, hinting at the title.
Despite the harmonious and idyllic setting, there are subtle subtexts. The gaze of the young woman is somewhat vacant and melancholy, contrasting with the relaxed posture of the man. The fishing rod, though visually present, is not actively being used by any of the foreground figures, and the distant figure in the pagoda is secluded, perhaps suggesting contemplation or a sense of detachment. The overall impression is one of serene, almost theatrical leisure, characteristic of Rococo arts interest in exoticism and idealized pastoral settings.
