A cluster of cherubic putti, adorning themselves with garlands of grapes and ivy, are gathered to her right. Some interact playfully with a shepherds crook and more grapes, while one appears to be dozing amongst the bounty. The background is a verdant landscape with abundant grapevines, lush foliage, and a dappled sky, signifying fertility and abundance associated with Bacchus and the harvest season.
The subtext of the painting revolves around themes of sensuality, pastoral joy, and the intoxicating pleasures of life. The Bacchantes relaxed posture and musical performance, coupled with the presence of the playful putti and abundant grapes, allude to themes of earthly delights, abandon, and perhaps even a gentle seduction. The overall mood is one of blissful indolence and carefree revelry, characteristic of Rococo arts celebration of beauty and pleasure.
