The figures are stylized, their faces elongated and possessing large, almond-shaped eyes with prominent pupils. Their features are simplified, conveying an impression of formality or perhaps even detachment. Both women wear elaborate robes; one in shades of blue with flowing drapery, the other in a pink and green combination also characterized by sweeping folds. Each holds a small object – a fan for the figure on the left, and what appears to be an orange sphere for the figure on the right.
On the table between them sit three small cups or bowls, arranged symmetrically. The arrangement of objects and figures suggests a ritualistic setting, perhaps a tea ceremony or some other formalized social interaction. However, the lack of expressive detail in the faces creates a sense of distance; there is no clear indication of emotional engagement between the two individuals.
The color palette is striking – the intense orange background contrasts sharply with the cool tones of the figures garments and the green foliage. This contrast draws attention to the central subjects while simultaneously creating a somewhat unsettling atmosphere. The overall effect is one of stylized elegance, tinged with an underlying sense of inscrutability. The painting seems to explore themes of formality, tradition, and perhaps even alienation within a structured social context.
