How to express thoughts and feelings on canvas is beyond my understanding. The first time I saw a moonlit night over the Dnipro River, I felt completely insignificant. But that feeling was strangely comforting.
Its simply impossible to create a good reproduction of this painting. The file has been replaced with a more detailed version, but you still cant see anything clearly; you need to see it in person.
The painting glows with phosphorescence –
And together, its a magnificent night.
This night and the river are one,
With the sounds of natural notes,
Creating music so profound,
That touches the soul.
I gaze at life, taking risks,
But I am accustomed to this now.
Ive never seen this work of art in person, but I really want to. Im sure its a truly stunning sight. However, Ive seen better reproductions online, ones that are more vibrant.
Good luck to everyone!
Thank you for your attention.
Len, in the original version, its even darker than here. It hangs in the Russian Museum near a window, and during daylight hours, you can only see the moon and a little bit of the river. To better appreciate the village and other details, its best to visit in the evening when there is less light coming from the windows.

This painting captivated me, but after looking at everything available online, I came to the conclusion that only by seeing the original can one truly understand how beautiful this painting is.
In reality, this painting seems to glow. When I saw it from afar, I thought it was a plasma screen or something similar :) The online reproduction doesnt capture its true beauty. I wish everyone could see it in person!
I heard that the painting is in the Russian Museum in St. Petersburg. I really want to see it in person. I will definitely go there soon. I agree with those who say that its mesmerizing!
I wonder if its true that the painting was made with precious paints and luminescent additives?
The painting is stunning. You can only truly appreciate its extraordinary beauty and charm by seeing it in person. I saw it in a dark room at Swallows Nest and was shocked; I couldnt believe my eyes... Its incredible. I even asked the girl who told me about it five times, Is it really not a lamp?:))) Its brilliant.
Heres my take on the painting by V. Suvorov (from a military perspective):
... And my favorite painting is Night on the Dnieper by Kuindzhi. Im not sure Ive ever seen it in reproductions. Its impossible to copy; its a black night, with 41 shades of black, a green moon, the color of a traffic light flame in the nocturnal fog, and a lunar path across the Dnieper, with reflections on the black clouds. What a night! What vastness! What power! It captures the very moment when crossing the Dnieper is crucial. And even better would be to secretly move the 3rd Guards Tank Army from the Bukrinsky bridgehead under the chirping of skylarks and regroup it at the Lyutezhsky bridgehead. So that no one finds out. And then, from Lyutezhsky, where the enemy wouldnt expect a tank army to appear, launch a sudden attack... Ah, Kuindzhi!
Yes! This painting is impossible to replicate or copy. The entire richness of this extraordinary and unparalleled work was known only to the master himself! It created and continues to create an impression of REAL light! And ever since I first saw it, until today, I have never seen such an impressive effect in rendering light anywhere else. He was a brilliant painter, which are rare to find these days!
Wow, its just filled with all these positive thoughts about literature; words can hardly describe it. Personally, it brings to mind Taras Bulba, Gogol, and so on... Its simply captivating.
I am enjoying these views even now, in the area around Kremenchuk. This is my homeland, and I will never leave here.
This painting is hanging in a Russian museum; I saw it there today. The guide said that the artist created six copies of this painting.
When I was in St. Petersburg, I specifically went to the Russian Museum to see this masterpiece once again. While my husband wandered through the halls, I rushed around looking for works by Kuindzhi. There werent many of them on display, but I spent more than an hour there.
The Arhip Kuindzhi Art Museum in Mariupol no longer exists – on March 21, it was destroyed as a result of a Russian air bomb strike. This was reported by the Mariupol City Council on its Telegram channel.
You cannot comment Why?
The foreground is a dark, undulating landscape, rendered in deep greens and blacks, with hints of brown and red. Along the riverbank, small, shadowy structures suggesting houses or simple dwellings are visible. A solitary, cylindrical object, possibly a well or a small tower, stands near the waters edge. The overall impression is one of profound stillness and quietude, with the natural elements – moon, sky, and river – dominating the scene.
The subtext of the painting likely revolves around themes of natures beauty, the mystery of the night, and a sense of spiritual or emotional reflection. The intense green light of the moonlit water can evoke feelings of wonder, enchantment, or even melancholy. The isolated dwellings suggest a human presence within this vast, nocturnal landscape, perhaps hinting at themes of solitude, homecoming, or the simple existence of life under the watchful eye of the moon. The subdued lighting and the vastness of the scene can also invite contemplation on the sublime power of nature and the individuals place within it.
