Central to the arrangement is a large, dark structure resembling a whale’s ribcage or vertebral column. Several animals are clustered around this central element. A zebra stands prominently on the left, its stripes sharply delineated against the snowy backdrop. Adjacent to it, a panda is positioned, its black and white markings providing another striking visual contrast. On the right side of the composition, a polar bear looms large, its imposing size suggesting dominance within the group.
A penguin occupies the foreground, facing towards the other animals with an air of quiet observation. A smaller bird, possibly a puffin or similar species, is perched near the base of the central structure. Within the dark cavity of the ribcage-like form, a deer can be discerned, partially obscured from view.
The subtext of this arrangement seems to revolve around themes of displacement and unlikely coexistence. The presence of animals typically associated with vastly different climates – the zebra, panda, polar bear, penguin – suggests an artificial or disrupted natural order. Their gathering around the skeletal remains of a whale implies a shared experience of loss or change, perhaps alluding to environmental disruption or ecological imbalance.
The artist’s choice of depicting these animals in such close proximity, despite their inherent differences and geographical separation, invites reflection on interconnectedness and the potential for adaptation in the face of adversity. The sunsets warm hues, while visually appealing, could also be interpreted as a melancholic reminder of what has been lost or is threatened. The overall effect is one of surrealism tinged with an underlying sense of concern about the fragility of ecosystems and the impact of human actions on the natural world.
