Description of Valentin Serov’s painting "Horses on the seashore
Painted in 1905 in oil on canvas, this painting belongs to the late work of the artist.
Serov was a master in portraiture as well as landscapes. Many paintings depicting political figures.
Style in painting: realism.
The picture is painted on the shore of the Gulf of Finland, where his family bought a cottage. Serov liked this place when he was passing on the Gulf of Finland in the summer of 1899. Two years later he bought a plot on which there was a house.
Here the Serov family often came for all the summer months. This place served as inspiration and solace for him. Horses have always been a particular favorite for artists, because they represent power, grace, and kindness.
For many thousands of years they have been a reliable and faithful friend of man. The image of horses, as well as people is a very difficult work for the artist. In a painting by Serov you can see horses at a watering place, as if they were alive. A flick of the tail of one of them adds realism to the landscape. Horses are depicted with refined lines, which was a strong feature of the artist. In the distance the Gulf of Finland floats ships with sails.
The painting is not characterized by a riot of colors, but is filled with tranquility and contemplation. The bay is depicted in a combination of shades of blue, purple, white and gray, which accurately depicts the coldness of the water surface. Somewhere in the distance, through a light haze, one can see mountains.
The sky is depicted by Serov not in the usual colors. He does not use the usual blue and white shades. His colors are special. The painting creates the impression of the overall unity of the water and air elements, only the horizon breaks this integrity.
The picture is in storage in the Museum of St. Petersburg.
Serov has left for our country a significant cultural heritage. Even in the later years of his creativity, when Serov had to be in the city a lot, fulfilling the orders, he did not leave his love for the rural landscapes and nature.

Perhaps it’s a painting of a couple of horses standing on top of a beach next to a body of water with a boat in the water in the background.
