Description of the painting "Mika Morozov" by Valentin Serov
The oil painting by the famous artist Valentin Alexandrovich Serov cannot help but attract attention when one passes by it in the exhibition hall of the Tretyakov Gallery, where it has the honor of being exhibited.
The artist does not accentuate a single thing in the interior. This applies to the chair, which seems to merge with the wall. And the incomprehensible shape of the multicolored cape on it. The same goes for the general background of the painting.
Everything merges into one solid gamma, which surrounds the main component - the child. By some miracle, the author manages a certain moment when the boy’s facial expression expresses anxious concern. It’s as if he is surprised, or even more, frightened by something. But at the same time does not hurry to remove his gaze from the object on which his attention has fallen.
It takes a special talent to see once, be able to display it on the canvas in full. After all, it is impossible that the child posed the same grimace the whole process of painting. And given that children are restless, then this possibility is excluded altogether.
Particular attention is also paid to the boy’s posture. It’s as if he wants to jump out of his chair, but he is not completely sure of the correctness of this movement. Chained and at the same time ready for action, he is looking at something. At the same time, his waist is pointing to the left side, which shows the direction the boy has chosen.
If the main part of the interior, the chair, turned out to be blurred, the child’s appearance, for all his discreet attire, came out very bright. Golden curls, braided into curls, parted pink lips, black eyes and a delicate blush on his cheeks - all this gives his image a special appeal. And Mickey’s bright white robe brings the boy closer to something cloudy and soft, something that is characteristic of little angels.

A handsome boy!
Great guy in the picture! Are there any writings or descriptions related to it?
I really like this picture; the boy is so cute. What do you think?
I like this painting, but the boy isnt very attractive... they could have chosen a better-looking model.
I really like it! The boy is truly adorable. Serov didnt just bring the painting to life; he poured his soul into it, as he did with all of his other portraits. Try reviving a painting like this yourself, if you think its so easy. If it were as simple as some of you say, the artist wouldnt be so famous, and this particular portrait wouldnt be printed in textbooks.
In the portrait of Miki Morozov (1901, State Tretyakov Gallery), the image is expressed through concise but extremely precise means. One must imagine how difficult it is for an artist to create a portrait of a four-year-old child if painting from life. And yet, this portrait was indeed painted from life, and not in one sitting. Nevertheless, there is not even a trace of that tense tension that often results from having a child pose, and which very few masters have been able to overcome.
The boy is depicted sitting in a childrens chair. But the portrait is full of internal dynamism, which is an essential part of the image. The rapid posture, the movement of his hands, the instantaneous gaze of his naive brown eyes directly convey a moment of intense childish excitement.
The dynamics emanating from the content of the image determined both the compositional features and the overall character of the painting. A sharp contrast is created between the large head and the slender, light figure. The chair, whose armrests are crossed diagonally by a small canvas, is located in the foreground so that the boys figure seems to roll towards the viewer. This movement, coming from the depths of the canvas, is emphasized by the actively expressed principle of constructing pictorial space, which is conceived as a kind of depth unfolding behind the picture plane. The contrast between the cold color of the snow-white suit and the warm, almost fiery tones of the dark-eyed, rosy face constitutes the main coloristic idea of the work.
Miki Morozov was painted not outdoors, but in a room. This forced the artist to seek brighter lighting, but also to paint from close range, which allowed him to better convey the silkiness of delicate baby skin, the fluffiness of curly hair, and to feel the expression of amazed, moist, burning with impatience, wide-eyed eyes looking at the world. It should be said that painting from a close distance is a very difficult task: as a rule, in such cases it is easy to lose the integrity of the viewers perception. However, Serov brilliantly overcame this difficulty – and thereby achieved significant expressive power.
The slightly open mouth with bright red lips is painted with several vibrant strokes; light, precise touches of the brush create the pearlescent teeth; and in a sparse, peculiar, difficult-to-define manner, the colorful back of the chair, which is partially in shadow, is rendered.
In this portrait, all of Serovs strength as a childrens portraitist is revealed with particular clarity. (Arbuzov G. S. Valentin Serov. Portrait Painting. Leningrad, 1968. P. 20 – 21.)

Красивый мальчик
I know this painting; the artist made a 4-year-old child sit for an entire hour to pose for it, but the boy was impatient and just wanted to play. This painting was created in 1901.
Yes, the baby is good, but who drew this?
I liked this painting because the artist used colors that were suitable for the portrait.

Valentin Aleksandrovich Serov is a magnificent master of portrait painting. His painting Misha Morozov is one of the finest childrens portraits in world art. In the painting, we see a boy who appears to be about five years old. The little boy is sitting on a chair, posing for the artist. This is the hero of the painting, whose name is Misha Morozov. I think he is tired of sitting still on the chair and wants to run outside to play as soon as possible. Looking at the image of the boy, one can assume that he has just woken up. He hasnt been dressed yet; he is wearing a nightshirt. His face is sleepy, and the remnants of sleep are still clinging to him. The childrens portrait exudes naivety, innocence, and sincerity. Misha Morozov is depicted against a dark background. This is why his light image with curls reminds me of a little angel, from whom radiates genuine tenderness and kindness.
Ну неплохо, если мальчика убрать
I received an A+ for the homework.
You cannot comment Why?
The subtext of the painting might relate to the innocence and curiosity of childhood. The boys expectant gaze and slightly parted lips evoke a sense of wonder and engagement with the world around him. The rich textures and colors, particularly in the patterned fabric, suggest a life filled with sensory experiences, even within a potentially humble or artistic setting. The dark background can be interpreted as a contrast that emphasizes the brightness and youth of the child, or perhaps as a representation of the unknown future he is looking towards. The title, Mika Morozov, 1901, identifies the subject as a specific individual, possibly a child from a prominent family given the likely context of the painting being commissioned. This personalizes the portrait, turning it into a snapshot of a particular moment in time for a specific young life.
