The subtexts of the painting revolve around themes of human ambition, hubris, and divine retribution. The Tower of Babel story itself is about humanitys attempt to reach heaven through building a tower, which angered God, who then confused their languages, leading to the projects abandonment. The painting visually represents this story by showcasing the colossal scale of human endeavor, the complexity of communication (implied by the potential for linguistic confusion), and the inherent limitations of human pride when set against divine power. The chaotic sky and the possibly unfinished or overburdened appearance of the tower can be interpreted as omens of impending disaster. The sheer detail and the multitude of tiny figures can also symbolize the vastness of human society and its collective endeavors, as well as the individual role within such grand, and potentially doomed, undertakings.
