This is truly a very warm and tender work. I really enjoy William Godwards works. He managed to combine the ancient Greek ideal of beauty with something forbidden – the pleasure of voyeurism. In his best works, the viewer almost accidentally glimpses an embodiment of the goddess Venus. A healthy, stately, aesthetically beautiful, and noble body of a lovely beauty. And spying is neither cultured nor beautiful, BUT DAMN IT! how can you resist?

The painting, titled Venus Binding Her Hair, depicts the Roman goddess of love and beauty, Venus, in a moment of private preparation. She is portrayed nude, with fair skin, and her reddish-brown hair is gathered in a bun. She wears a green ribbon that circles her forehead and is in the process of tying her hair with it, holding a small blue bead or charm in her hands. Her pose is graceful and contemplative as she looks down at her task.
The setting is opulent, suggesting a luxurious boudoir or dressing room. Venus stands on a patterned marble floor partially covered by a rich tiger-skin rug and draped in golden and gray fabrics. Behind her, a dark curtain sets a backdrop, and to her left, a grand architectural element with ornate columns and marble suggests a palatial environment. The overall lighting is soft, highlighting Venuss form against the darker background.
