Orest Adamovich Kiprensky painted a portrait of Davydov in 1809, when the wars with Napoleon were just beginning. The work itself is a ceremonial portrait of a young and dashing hussar with the rank of colonel. He is drawn full-length, his posture is careless and somewhat picturesque. His costume is a red hussar’s uniform, white pants, and low boots. The hussar’s cape has been removed from his head and lies to the left of the hussar, and his saber is used as a support.
The colors used for his costume and the gloomy, preearthquake landscape that the Hussar is standing in front of only strengthen the impression of the painting’s character - he is a brave warrior, a man of duty, and a romantic dreamer. The hussar’s face is courageous and spiritual. Unlike other painters’ military portraits, Kiprensky does not focus on the brawling prowess of his character, but instead concentrates on revealing his personality.
Even today art historians are still arguing about who is depicted in this portrait - the famous Denis Davydov or his cousin Eugraf, who was also one of the heroes of the War of 1812. Both versions have their supporters. In favor of the first version is the fact that the sons of Denis Davydov called this work a portrait of their father and asked the art academy for permission to photograph it.
Some of the researches are of the opinion that the hussar depicted in the picture is a collective image of a Russian officer of those years, a hero of that turbulent time, which, in fact, was Denis Davydov.
