REMEMBERING THE PROPHET ISAIAH
Distancing oneself from
Deceptions and illusions.
Stone ants
Know many dead paths.
The July heat is almost boiling.
Your days are counted.
But Isaiahs voice is powerful! -
It sounds with bitterness and pain.
And it fills the brain.
A book of the Bible. Days pass –
I could not saturate them with timeless salt.
Rustling, a haze of bustle.
I myself am almost forty,
The past lies like ore.
What can you tell, old man,
If the eternal enemy is strong?
And the gray-haired old man remains silent.
The hero will tear himself apart!
To be pieced together again afterward.
Blood flows through the grass.
Autumn scatters leaves once more.
As long as one lives – one must believe.
No one has known two truths.
Truth is singular.
How soluble is salt in water?
That royal, magnificent palace
Will collapse – says the moon.
But words are stronger than Rome.
The wise man knows this.
You cannot comment Why?
The artist utilizes a dense hatching technique to create texture and depth throughout the scene. The rocky walls of the enclosure appear rough and uneven, contributing to a sense of claustrophobia and inescapable confinement. Smoke or vapor rises from the lower left corner, obscuring the ground and adding an element of atmospheric unease. This visual effect could symbolize suffering, decay, or perhaps even a purgatorial state.
The demonic figures are rendered with considerable detail, their expressions conveying malice and sadistic glee. Their postures suggest active participation in the torment of the central figure, rather than mere observation. The arrangement of these creatures around him creates a sense of encirclement, highlighting his isolation and powerlessness.
Beyond the immediate depiction of physical suffering, the drawing hints at deeper subtexts concerning themes of faith, temptation, and resistance against overwhelming forces. The man’s posture, while strained, retains an element of dignity; he does not appear to have succumbed entirely to his tormentors. This suggests a potential narrative of spiritual endurance or defiance in the face of adversity. The landscape itself, barren and oppressive, could be interpreted as symbolic of a desolate inner state or a world devoid of grace. Ultimately, the drawing evokes a powerful sense of psychological distress and the struggle between opposing forces – a battle for the soul, perhaps.
