JAPANESE MOTIFS
1
To gaze into the rock garden – a model
Of existence, or perhaps the universe.
Nearby stands a quiet, paper-thin house,
Where contemplation is its own reward.
The fruits of the tea ceremony –
A quiet look inward, a poem.
You will hear a haiku about water –
As if time were to stop.
2
The samurais backplate,
Patterned with spikes and intricate designs,
And two swords, and such a life,
Where there is no pain, no groan imaginable.
Having treated everyone, having prepared everything,
He will open his own belly.
There are now stains of blood on the floor,
And the samurai will die in silence.
3
The cherry blossoms bloom in poems.
Yellow wine slumbers in a glass.
4
A Tokyo avalanche will crash down on you
With all its colorful advertising.
You are stifled in the traffic jams,
Yet you move forward directly.
A whistling, noisy movement.
Hectares rise upwards, made of glass.
The past versus change –
How attractive are these changes to us?
There is something – there is charm
In this bustling, colorful metropolis.
Suddenly – a separation from yourself,
Lost... but the mobile phone hums on your belt.
5
Sake, heated as it should be,
Fried eel lies next to rice.
Will you hold the chopsticks in your hand,
Understanding the all-Japanese flavor?
Oh, there is another harmony of food here,
Strange rows of flavors.
But dont try fugu fish, my friend,
You took a bite – and death suddenly came to the table.
6
The branches are bent, they resemble
Hieroglyphs.
Past and present days
Combine into something
Unified by the memory of text. Hieroglyphs
Are wonderfully curved with ink.
And here is a little man with a forked gesture.
7
A pond with golden fish,
With snails on the banks,
And the snails seem to be smiling,
Dissolved later in poems.

The figure’s hair is styled in an intricate updo, adorned with decorative pins and what appear to be feathers or stylized foliage. The elaborate coiffure contributes significantly to the overall sense of refinement and status. She wears a richly patterned kimono; the design incorporates floral motifs rendered in shades of red, yellow, green, and brown. A contrasting fabric, possibly silk, is draped across her lap, adding another layer of visual complexity.
The color palette is restrained but effective, relying on earthy tones punctuated by brighter accents. The artist employs a limited range of hues to create depth and texture within the clothing and hair. Lines are crisp and defined, contributing to the print’s characteristic aesthetic.
A vertical inscription occupies the left margin of the composition. While the text itself is illegible without translation, its presence indicates that this work was likely intended as more than just a purely visual representation; it carries textual information – perhaps biographical details about the subject or poetic commentary on the scene depicted.
Subtlety pervades the image. The figure’s averted gaze and contemplative pose suggest an interiority that is not readily accessible to the viewer. The pipe, rather than being presented as a symbol of pleasure or relaxation, becomes an object of quiet scrutiny – a detail that invites speculation about the subjects character and circumstances. The overall effect is one of understated elegance and restrained emotion, characteristic of certain artistic traditions focused on portraying moments of private reflection within a framework of social formality.
