The subtext of the painting speaks of triumph and its aftermath. The knights gleaming armor and proud stance signify victory and conquest. However, the pensive woman and the discarded items beneath suggest the cost of this conquest. The womans sorrow might represent the emotional toll of war or separation, possibly a loved one departing or a realm being subjugated. The scattered armor and chalices could symbolize the spoils of war, but also the vanity or even the ruination that can accompany such endeavors. The overall impression is one of masculinity and power contrasted with a quieter, perhaps mournful, femininity and the reflective emptiness that can follow aggressive acquisition.
