In the upper portion of the work, a singular, wide-open eye is encased within a radiant solar orb. This central eye acts as a source of light, casting a warm, golden glow over the scene, suggesting an all-seeing, omnipresent deity. To the left of this eye, a white lamb stands prominently, holding a slender staff. The purity of the lamb and its elevated position suggest a sacrificial yet triumphant presence, often associated with themes of innocence and divinity. Adjacent to the solar orb, an open book rests amidst swirling clouds, its pages filled with illegible script, symbolizing divine law or revealed wisdom.
The middle ground is anchored by two primary figures seated on either side of a central celestial sphere. On the left, we see a male figure characterized by his semi-nude state, draped in a heavy red cloak. He holds a sword vertically, and a visible wound on his torso indicates a history of martyrdom or physical suffering. His posture is contemplative, looking slightly away from the center toward the lamb.
On the right, the artist depicted a female figure of regal bearing, adorned with a crown and flowing dark hair. She holds a small wooden chest containing a white bird – likely a dove – and clutches a palm branch, a traditional iconographic symbol of victory over death or peace. Between these two figures, a large, pale blue sphere represents the terrestrial or cosmic world. This orb is marked by small circular voids, perhaps signifying the planets or the incompleteness of the physical realm.
In the lower register, the composition shifts toward more unsettling imagery. At the base of the central sphere, hands emerge from a dark void, grasping at the edge of the world. Below them sits another singular eye, embedded within an earthy, textured mound. This positioning creates a tension between the celestial light above and a subterranean, perhaps more primal or watchful, presence below.
The subtext of this work appears to revolve around the duality of existence: the struggle between the divine and the earthly, and the concept of eternal surveillance. The repetition of the eye – one in the heavens and one on the earth – suggests that no action escapes cosmic scrutiny. The juxtaposition of the martyr figure with the regal female figure suggests a balance between suffering and triumph, or sacrifice and sovereignty, all contained within a universe governed by an unseen, watchful intelligence.
