Description of Fyodor Yakovlevich Alekseev’s painting Red Square in Moscow
1801 г.
Landscape painted by the artist in oil on canvas during his "business trip" around Moscow arranged for him by Paul I. The artist’s task was to become thoroughly acquainted with the lifestyles of Muscovites and the sights of the city and to display all this very clearly and in detail in artistic form. When Alekseev started this task he considered so many places in Moscow to be worthy of being immortalized in landscapes that later he created a whole series of pictures devoted to this subject.
Red Square is depicted in all its glory. The author managed to convey all the subtleties of architectural structures located on the square. In the center, of course, is the main landmark of all times in Russia - the Intercession Cathedral or St. Basil’s Cathedral. It is original and beautiful, shining with multicolored domes, and towers over the people gathered on the square.
On the right side of the square depicts the Kremlin Wall. On the left side the artist drew long rows of vendors, along which the mass of people gathered. Wagons and horses, women in colorful dresses and men at the stalls with goods - all these characters are mixed into one general bustling landscape depicted by the author and showing the importance of Red Square as a place of trade at the time of the painting’s creation.
A great deal of space in the painting is given to the depiction of the sky, which seems to cover everything below. A soft celestial light floods the entire square. This is very deeply shown in the painting and makes it very lively and ornate. Several other architectural merits, depicted in the background, complete the overall image of the beautiful and integral landscape of Moscow life on Red Square.
These are such structures as the library of Vasily Kipriyanov in front of the Spasskaya Tower, the arrows of the Ascension Monastery, and the tent of the Tsar’s Tower. In addition, the Frontal Place in the center of the square is very clearly drawn.

Кремль зарос деревьями и кустарником, словно в Москве в течении 15-20 лет никто не жил

The picture has something of this: architecture, building, church, city, tower, sunset, cathedral, cityscape, evening, town, dusk, sky, goth like, group, turning point.
Perhaps it’s a painting of a city with a lot of people on the street and a horse and buggy in the foreground and a church in the background.
