Nikolai Ge liked to paint religious paintings. He also painted portraits and historical paintings. He even tried his hand at sculpture and was quite successful. Since childhood he was interested in painting and made small sketches.

To create a famous painting "Heralds of the Resurrection" the artist began after the success in St. Petersburg. His work evokes positive exclamations, and the exhibition gathers many admirers of his talent. After returning to Florence, the author takes up painting an interesting canvas.

He wishes to convey the moment of the resurrection of Christ. The painting is literally divided into two distinct parts. In the upper corner, a woman walks across the stale earth, directing her prayer upward. She hurries to tell everyone that Jesus has risen, the news that will give strength to all fallen Christians. Her rags are flapping in the wind, but she does not feel the chill.

Magdalene drags her feet proudly in spite of scornful glances and unkind whispers. It is as if she wants to rise above the ground, turning into a bird with wings. But ragged fabrics are developing behind her back, and they will not help her at all to rise to the heavens.

The girl is confident that her soul is already flying in the clouds, her strength betrayed by her faith.

In the lower corner of the canvas stand the pagans. They have crucified the faith of Christians in the person of Jesus. The men stood beneath the cross and watched the agonizing suffering of Christ. Their spades were pointed into the flesh, they smirked. Now the foes whispered, realizing that their faith would fall. It is impossible to ignore the resurrection, which means they find themselves on the side of darkness. They see a proud woman carrying the good news.

Except that critics did not understand this work by Nikolai Ge. Someone even compared the girl to a magpie. People whispered at the canvas, like the guards in the shadows. The author understood that this disapproval leads to failure.
