DEVILS
1
In a hundred voices they chatter and draw
To dark achievements, subjugating will
And enchanting the mind. The route goes
Through a wretched province.
Everywhere there is crooked fencing and dirt.
And people build ambitious plans.
Striving to win an infernal victory,
They believe that with power, we will be masters.
Kirillov goes to bed late, he
Explores himself at night.
But whoever violates the moral law –
Its better to have a stone around your neck, I wont hide it.
Why listen to devils? Well, why?
As if there is no sunlight,
As if there are not enough sources of light!
This used to be in the province.
Petrusha Verkhovensky and his friends,
The sum of their wild actions.
Then – Russias path was derailed.
A warning sounded in vain.
Never obey the devils,
Fight your bad illusions.
The mud splashes as if forever
Nasty mud has reigned in Russia.

Kirillov goes to bed late.
The city is crooked, ugly, and dark –
You will have to live with hope,
If there are such crooked houses here.
How much understanding can be found
With devils? No,
And dont try – its so unsettling
When the light is skewed around you.
Is Kirillov right then? Hardly,
You cannot give your life
To devils, which holds the possibility of verticality
– but how to decipher it?
You cannot comment Why?
Below this dominant presence lies a reclining female form, seemingly vulnerable and passive in comparison. Her posture is relaxed, her face turned away from the viewer, suggesting a state of either sleep or resignation. The artist placed her within a swirling, nebulous environment composed of warm tones – ochre, gold, and amber – that contrast with the cooler blues and grays used for the figure’s wings and background. Scattered stars punctuate this atmospheric space, adding to the sense of cosmic scale.
The color palette is restrained, primarily utilizing earth tones and muted hues. This limited range contributes to a somber and unsettling mood. The use of light and shadow is dramatic, highlighting the muscular contours of the central figure while obscuring details in the background and on the reclining woman.
Subtexts within this work appear to explore themes of power, vulnerability, and perhaps even subjugation. The imposing stature and monstrous attributes of the male figure suggest a position of authority or dominance over the female form below. Her passive posture could be interpreted as symbolic of oppression or submission. The swirling environment might represent chaos or an otherworldly realm, hinting at forces beyond human comprehension. The overall effect is one of unease and ambiguity, prompting contemplation on the dynamics between strength and weakness, control and surrender.
