Modigliani painted a huge number of portraits over five years (over three hundred in all). We see a girl dressed in a simple blue dress. She sits posing for the artist.
Alice looks at the audience. Her eyes are large almond-shaped. Her face is framed by her hair of a dark shade. It hangs carelessly down over her dress. The painter deliberately stylizes her face under the mask typical for African tribes.
The canvas is as simple in color as possible. The range of tones varies from blue to terracotta. As a result, Modigliani manages to create an unusual contrast. The artist’s creation acquires a special liveliness. At the same time, the silence and incredible harmony is not violated.
The artist preferred elongated forms. They are very clearly traced and in this portrait. Alice’s head is shaped like an egg and her neck looks like a cylinder. Her silhouette is deliberately elongated. The vertical size of the canvas once again emphasizes this. The proportions are far from classical ideals.
Modigliani manages to convey the girl’s inner mood. In her eyes one can see absolute calmness and a certain coldness. The open forehead impresses by its resoluteness. The painter draws her features as precisely as possible. The girl sits quietly with her hands folded in her lap. All contours are incredibly clear. The background creates a certain contrast with Alice’s figure. At the same time it harmonizes with the color of her dress.
Modigliani managed to depict as much alive girl as possible. She is serious without the weather. Wrong proportions don’t spoil her look at all. The audience gets a warm feeling when looking at Alice. We can feel the artist’s special attitude towards her.
In the portraits of the artist impresses a special gracefulness of silhouettes, subtle transitions of color, expressive emotions. Modigliani skillfully creates his own world. Each of his portraits is a real miracle, which embodies the artist’s vision of the world.
