Description of Alexei Korzukhin’s painting "Sunday Afternoon".
Alexei Ivanovich Korzukhin is recognized as one of Russia’s most talented genre artists. Unfortunately, during his lifetime art criticism did not take him seriously, although today his works are represented in a variety of museums and are in great demand at exhibitions.
All his talent can be seen in the painting "Sunday afternoon". The composition of the picture depicts one of the days of an ordinary Russian family. All its members are gathered in the glade, there are children and their nanny.
The baby is in her caring hands and gentle arms, smiling and laughing. All of them are in a wonderful mood. The same reflects the state of nature, the sun is clearly shining, warming the family. The coachman plays the harmonica merrily, the father and mother dance merrily, raising the spirits of all present.
The boiling samovar is depicted in the middle of the composition. The family will soon be eating and drinking tea. The eldest son is waving his hand fervently in the dance of his parents. A lonely balalaika is lying idle beside him. A girl in blue attire sets the table. Near the boy a girl in white, listening to the music of the harmonica and smiling.
In his "Sunday afternoon", the composition of the details is striking. Everything here is drawn to the smallest detail. The family’s belongings lie in a big pile, there’s an umbrella, a bag, and clothes. The entire forest composition plays with amazing colors: the trees as if alive, the grass is incredibly green and lush, forest flowers are blooming in some places. There is a light misty haze over the lake, big trees can be seen in the distance.
From such a lively and cheerful plot, the smell of family warmth, the simplicity of laughter, the smells of a pleasant dinner. The family is portrayed very sincerely. The viewer himself wants to get to this merry clearing, to spin in a crazy dance, to play along with the accordionist and just to be in this wonderful spring atmosphere.

The figures are arranged in two distinct groupings. In the foreground, several individuals are seated on the grass, engaged in what seems to be a picnic. A fire burns between them, emitting smoke that rises into the air. The clothing of these people suggests a working-class background – simple dresses and vests prevail. One woman is shown with her hands raised towards the sky, perhaps in a gesture of joy or supplication. Another figure appears to be offering bread from a basket.
Behind this group, closer to the tree’s trunk, stands another cluster of individuals. A woman in a vibrant red dress holds an infant, while a man, presumably the father, gestures animatedly towards her. He is dressed in white shirt and vest, suggesting a slightly elevated social standing compared to those in the foreground. Another woman, clad in dark attire, appears to be dancing or performing some kind of ritualistic movement, her arms raised in a similar fashion to the woman in the foreground.
The lighting is soft and diffused, contributing to an overall atmosphere of tranquility and contentment. The artist has employed a realistic style, with careful attention paid to details such as the texture of the grass, the folds of the clothing, and the expressions on the faces of the figures.
Subtleties within the scene hint at deeper meanings. The contrast between the two groups – the relaxed picnic-goers and the more formal gathering around the tree – might suggest a social hierarchy or differing levels of comfort with public display. The woman’s gesture towards the sky, repeated by another figure in the foreground, could be interpreted as an expression of faith or gratitude for natures bounty. The dancing figure introduces an element of theatricality and perhaps even folklore, suggesting a connection to traditional customs and beliefs. Overall, the painting conveys a sense of communal harmony and celebration within a rural setting, while also subtly alluding to social dynamics and cultural practices.
