The ground around him is strewn with symbolic elements. To his left, near his feet, lies a skull, a clear memento mori representing death and the transience of earthly life, but also symbolizing Adams skull, from which humanitys sins originated. A bundle of what appears to be reeds or a whip is also present, alluding to the scourging Christ endured. To his right, a discarded shroud or cloth lies on the ground, perhaps representing the lost earthly glory or the material world. Nearby, a cranium or helmet-like object is visible, and to the far right, a set of dice are depicted. These dice are a symbolic reference to the soldiers who cast lots for Christs garments after his crucifixion, as described in the Gospel of John. The artistic monogram AD is also visible in the lower right corner, identifying Albrecht Dürer as the artist.
The subtexts of this engraving are deeply religious and theological. The imagery focuses on Christs humanity and his immense suffering for the sins of mankind. The outstretched arms can be interpreted as an embrace of his fate, a sacrifice for redemption, or a final, desperate appeal. The stark depiction of his physical agony, amplified by the crown of thorns and the visible wounds, emphasizes the brutality of his human execution. The juxtaposition of Christ with symbols of death (the skull) and the instruments of his suffering (the reeds/whip) serves to highlight the profound nature of his sacrifice. The dice add another layer, reminding the viewer of the indifference and cruelty of the world that brought about this divine sacrifice. The overall tone is one of profound sorrow, theological contemplation, and a powerful representation of Christian salvation through suffering.
