APOSTLE JOHN
Close to Jesus, enlightened,
John perceives the Word,
Like a luminous idea for the world.
Only what Jesus said
Eases the burden of mundane days,
Promising a different life in the future.
I can only dimly imagine
The forms of afterlife,
So I turn back to the Gospels again.
There is an idea of the world. And words.
There is dead grass of oblivion –
I cut it down, I free myself from it...
John was freed – or did he not have -
Anger, envy and other arrows,
That pierce the soul like a bodys pain.
Jerusalem is very grand.
Who in it yearns for wise books?
The poor quarters are tightly packed.
A city surrounded by hills, hills.
Herods palace is luxurious – we
Should not be seduced by luxury.
Streets. Alleys. Dead ends.
Steps lead to the city ponds.
A massive block of the Temple looms overhead.
John understood the meaning of the Last Supper
Better – because he was enlightened -
Than others. The future is frightening.
And on Patmos, he was in spirit,
He foresaw the future, captivated
By images – their layering is strange.
Revelation – a review of all
Significant events up to the 1950s,
Up to the twentieth century.
Beyond that lies an entrance into a coded space.
Through the air-sun canopy,
The third millennium has been brought down.
Close to Jesus, enlightened,
John knew what would happen next...

Here we see a complex interplay of color and texture. The figure’s skin possesses a pale luminosity contrasted by the deep shadows that obscure portions of their form. They are draped in layers of fabric – a vibrant green tunic beneath a flowing, intensely pink mantle. These fabrics do not fall naturally; instead, they writhe and twist around the body, creating a sense of movement and dynamism that contributes to the overall feeling of heightened emotion. The artist employed broad brushstrokes, particularly evident in the rendering of the drapery, which lends a palpable energy to the scene.
In the figure’s left hand, they hold aloft an ornate chalice from which tendrils of smoke or vapor rise. This element introduces a symbolic layer; it suggests a connection to divine grace and possibly alludes to themes of revelation or spiritual sustenance. The gesture of the right hand, extended outwards in a posture that could be interpreted as offering or protection, further reinforces this sense of sacredness.
The background is rendered with an atmospheric perspective, utilizing muted tones of gray and brown to create a cloudy, indistinct space. This lack of detail draws attention solely to the figure and their immediate surroundings, intensifying the focus on their internal state. The darkness surrounding the subject contributes to a feeling of isolation and introspection.
Subtly, there is a sense of melancholy conveyed through the downward gaze and the muted palette used for the background. It’s not an image of triumphant joy but rather one of quiet suffering or profound understanding. The swirling drapery, while visually arresting, also suggests turmoil or spiritual struggle. Overall, the painting conveys a powerful emotional resonance, inviting contemplation on themes of faith, sacrifice, and divine revelation.
