The subtexts of Gimblette revolve around themes of sensuality, playfulness, and perhaps even a subtle commentary on societal expectations of women. The provocative pose and disheveled attire challenge conventions of modesty. The title itself, Gimblette, which can refer to a type of small, curled dog, alludes to the womans playful and perhaps somewhat subservient position, like a pet. The overall impression is one of flirtatious invitation and a dalliance with controlled eroticism, characteristic of Rococo arts emphasis on pleasure and aristocratic leisure.
