At the heart of the work stands the crucified figure. The body is rendered with a stark simplicity; anatomical detail is minimal, emphasizing instead the posture of suffering and sacrifice. The head is bowed, suggesting resignation or pain. The arms extend horizontally, defining the boundaries of the central form.
Flanking the central image are three symbolic elements arranged vertically. On the left, we see a chalice positioned above the stacked letters FIDES, which likely represents faith. To the right, a hammer rests on the ground beneath the inscription “SAPPLIETA,” potentially signifying tools or instruments of labor and sacrifice. The middle section displays the word IMMORTA in capital letters, suggesting an eternal quality or transcendence.
The overall effect is one of solemnity and austerity. The limited palette – primarily browns and tans – contributes to a sense of gravity and timelessness. The deliberate roughness of the execution reinforces this impression, moving away from polished realism towards a more expressive and symbolic representation.
Subtly, the work seems to explore themes of faith, sacrifice, and perhaps even redemption. The chalice suggests communion and spiritual nourishment, while the hammer alludes to the act of creation or destruction – a duality inherent in many religious narratives. The inscription IMMORTA points towards a belief in something beyond earthly existence, offering solace amidst suffering. The deliberate lack of contextual detail encourages contemplation on these universal themes rather than focusing on specific narrative elements.
