хорошая картина
Chekhov, traveling along the Volga River, wrote to Kuvshinnikova: I saw Ples. I recognized the churchyard church, I saw the house with a red roof...
The house belonged to two owners, Groghev and Podgorny.
That summer, Levitan set up his studio in this house. Five windows from floor to ceiling, narrow and rounded, let in a lot of light into the room. Levitans easel stood here. His Golden Ples was painted here.
This painting was created in a very peculiar way. On a tiny board, he made the first sketch from nature. And then, in the evenings, he would go to the hill and find a spot from which he could see the hill with stumps and young shrubs, the large Groghev house, the tall bell tower of the Zarechenskaya Church of Saint Barbara, behind it, the five domes of another church, and the endless flat surface of the river. Levitan observed and even memorized the colors, just as one memorizes poems and sonatas.
Friends were very interested in everything that Levitan was creating now, and about the new method of his work, Vinogradov wrote to Khruslov that same autumn:
I like Levitan (especially his latest works). I heard that he painted a picture there, in Ples (a sunset), and he worked like this: every evening he would go somewhere on a hill and watch the sunset, and during the day he would paint the picture at home based on his impressions, and so it continued every evening and day. Its very interesting what came of it. I heard this from V. Bogdanov, who heard it from Aladjalov.
After Levitan returned to Moscow, P. M. Tretyakov came to his studio. He looked at Golden Ples and After the Rain. He bought both paintings even before they were exhibited.

The subtexts of this painting likely revolve around themes of natures beauty, spiritual tranquility, and the passage of time. The golden light and peaceful river evoke a sense of calm and spiritual reflection, enhanced by the presence of the church. The contrast between the vibrant green hillside and the bare tree stumps could symbolize the cycle of life and renewal, or perhaps the impact of human activity on the natural landscape. The overall impression is one of quiet contemplation and appreciation for the timeless beauty of the Russian countryside at the end of a day.
