Beneath the cross, a group of figures is arranged in a triangular configuration. A woman dressed in pink sits on the ground, her face tilted upwards towards the crucified figure with an expression that conveys grief and reverence. To her left, another woman, clad in white, raises her hands in a gesture of lamentation or supplication. A third figure, presumably a male saint identifiable by his halo and habit, stands slightly behind them, also looking up at the cross.
On the right side of the composition, a man is depicted raising a long pole towards the cross. His posture and attire – a simple tunic and cap – suggest he is one of the Roman soldiers involved in the execution. The ground beneath the cross is stained with blood, which pools outwards, creating a visual emphasis on the sacrifice taking place.
The subdued color palette contributes to the solemnity of the scene. Earth tones – browns, ochres, and muted reds – are prevalent, lending a sense of gravity and austerity. The background is rendered in a pale, almost monochromatic manner, drawing attention to the figures in the foreground.
Subtly, the artist seems interested in portraying not just the suffering of Christ but also the emotional responses of those witnessing his death. The expressions on the faces of the women convey deep sorrow and spiritual anguish. The inclusion of the Roman soldier introduces a layer of complexity, hinting at the human agency involved in this divine event. The architectural setting, while seemingly simple, grounds the scene within a specific religious context, suggesting that this is not merely an isolated incident but part of a larger narrative of faith and redemption.
