Sir Joshua Reynolds, the first president of the British Academy of Arts, was a model gentleman. He was as educated as he was intelligent. He easily gathered the London elite in his home.
Being an original, serious, and erudite man in matters of art, he could skillfully use his talent. He managed to direct it in the right direction, calculating the artistic effect.
Lord Heathfield, Lady Hamilton, Colonel Tarleton are among the most famous subjects of his paintings.
An unparalleled physiognomist, Reynolds painted faces vividly. Warm and rich tones create a sense of realism, although this was not his primary goal; he always strived to create historical paintings with recognizable allegories.
Thus appeared the portrait of the famous actress Sarah Siddons in the role of the muse of tragedy. Her delicate hand, regally placed on the armrest of the throne, her other hand slightly raised, and her beautiful gaze directed upwards – she is listening to Inspiration. And in a somber confrontation, figures of Crime and Vengeance darken behind her.
The elderly general Lord Heathfield, who defended Gibraltar, was depicted by Reynolds against the backdrop of the citadel, with a huge key in his hands, surrounded by gunpowder smoke.
And the beautiful Lady Hamilton, the adventurous mistress of Admiral Nelson, was portrayed as an alluring Venus.
