A glass of wine. Painting by Jan Vermeer.
Boris Khanin.
The lute played, a song rang out,
Passionate poems were recited.
A glass with a drink, for the beginning,
Usually foreshadowed sins.
Not everything here is clear. And the girl,
Having drained her glass of wine,
Does not want to agree at all
To what he offered her.
The painting is full of intrigue
In a meeting between young people.
There is twilight and glimmers of light.
A condition exists to gain control.
But before the girl is Virtue,
That sits on the windowsill.
She, no matter how you turn it, is a witness
To an intimate encounter in silence.
And the set square – a measuring tool
And the chain she holds in her hands,
Warn. The tempter
Is not sincere in his words.
He has a green cloak
And a hat. An imposing figure.
A slightly feigned smile.
He will convince anyone.
But the woman, though with a glass
Of wine held near her mouth,
Listens listlessly to the flatterers words.
And her lips are busy.
How well the shirt harmonizes
With the white pitcher on the table.
But it is evident that he made a mistake,
The trickster in his planned game.
In the painting you can see the perspective -
A mixture of floor tiles and a window.
Jan Vermeers painting
Is still full of mysteries.

Here we see two figures engaged in what appears to be a moment of shared contemplation or conversation. A man, dressed in dark attire – a broad-brimmed hat and voluminous cloak – is seated at a small table covered with an ornate textile. His posture is relaxed, his gaze directed towards the woman beside him. She wears a white cap and a coral-colored dress; her hands are delicately positioned as she examines something held between her fingers. A partially filled glass of wine sits on the table before them, its contents reflecting the ambient light.
The setting itself is meticulously rendered. The tiled floor exhibits a pattern of dark squares set against lighter ones, adding visual texture to the scene. Behind the figures, a framed painting hangs on the wall, offering a glimpse into another space or perhaps representing an idealized landscape. A writing desk and chair are visible in the background, suggesting intellectual pursuits or correspondence.
The artist’s attention to detail is striking; from the folds of fabric to the sheen of the glass, every element contributes to a sense of realism and tangible presence. The color palette is restrained, dominated by dark tones punctuated by the vibrant red of the womans dress and the warm hues reflected in the wine glass.
Subtleties within the scene suggest layers of meaning beyond the immediate depiction of two individuals sharing a moment. The man’s attire implies status or wealth, while the woman’s focused attention might indicate intellectual curiosity or perhaps a more complex emotional state. The presence of the wine introduces an element of indulgence and potentially alludes to themes of pleasure and transience. The framed painting in the background could be interpreted as a symbol of aspiration or a commentary on the nature of representation itself. Overall, the work evokes a sense of quiet observation, inviting viewers to ponder the unspoken narratives unfolding within this carefully constructed domestic space.
