The subtext of Undergrowth can be interpreted in several ways. The dense, almost claustrophobic layering of vegetation can evoke a sense of natures overwhelming power and complexity, a wildness that resists easy human comprehension or control. The rich, saturated colors and energetic brushwork, characteristic of Van Goghs style, convey a profound emotional response to the natural world. It can represent a spiritual or emotional immersion in nature, a place of solace and intense feeling. The painting could also subtly hint at the artists own internal landscape, with the dense undergrowth mirroring a complex psychological state – perhaps a feeling of being overwhelmed, but also of finding beauty and vitality within that complexity. The thick impasto might suggest a struggle to express profound, almost uncontainable emotions.
