INDIAN SUMMER
So, once again, Indian summer – the arcs
Of its mystique are quite resilient.
Remembering summer without embellishment is
Justified and clear to me.
Tap on a watermelon – firm,
Ripe and crimson – such moments are not rare,
But can you carry that berry?
Im willing to risk my eyesight to do so:
For even with glasses, my vision isnt sharp.
Indian summer has issued a visa
In a kaleidoscope of colors – a Byzantine haze
Given in its vibrancy.
If youre over forty,
Youve seen colored leaves many times.
I exist through observation.
The sum total – and it’s rich with gold.
Contemplate the continuation of summer:
Everything given – nothing taken,
Vertical lines of golden light.
You cannot comment Why?
To the left, a cluster of trees with dark trunks and lush foliage frames the scene, their branches reaching towards the upper portion of the canvas. These trees serve as visual anchors, grounding the composition while simultaneously creating depth. Along the right edge, slender cypress trees punctuate the skyline, adding verticality and reinforcing the classical associations suggested by the architectural ruin.
In the foreground, a small bronze sculpture is placed on a pedestal within a circular bed of vegetation. The figure appears to be male, possibly depicting a mythological or allegorical subject; however, its details are obscured by distance and the pervasive golden light. This placement draws the viewer’s eye into the scene and introduces an element of human presence, albeit one that feels distant and contemplative.
The artists brushwork is loose and textured, with visible strokes contributing to a sense of immediacy and capturing the shimmering quality of sunlight on foliage. The color palette is restricted primarily to yellows, golds, browns, and greens, creating a unified visual effect. This limited range contributes to an impression of stillness and tranquility.
Subtly, the painting suggests themes of memory, loss, and the enduring power of classical ideals. The ruin signifies decay and the inevitable decline of human endeavors, while the sculpture hints at a continued reverence for artistic achievement. The pervasive golden light could be interpreted as representing either hope or nostalgia – a longing for a past era of beauty and refinement. Overall, the work conveys an atmosphere of quiet contemplation and melancholy reflection on the relationship between humanity, nature, and time.
