ANDREA MANTENYA
... existence is harsh...
Coal is no clearer than your thoughts,
Where the word reigns supreme.
The artists mind is still.
And – it transforms into a cosmos,
Even a misty landscape.
From sweat, strands of hair stick together.
In the heart, the Our Father resounds.
Christ, through death, lies motionless –
An ordinary body.
But for us, the heavens are incomprehensible –
These secret boundaries.
The space is too vast.
Victory is impossible.
Christianity promises salvation,
No matter how insignificant you may be.
Lord! Only you allow
Works to endure.
You nourish them with the juice of hope,
And you elevate me above myself,
So that I might rise to the distant stars!
You cannot comment Why?
To the left of the deceased, a figure is depicted in an attitude of intense sorrow. This individual, presumably a mourner, presses a cloth to their face, conveying deep emotional distress. The rendering of this person’s features – the furrowed brow, the downturned mouth – suggests not merely sadness but also a sense of profound despair and helplessness. Their proximity to the deceased underscores the intimacy of grief and loss.
The bed itself is simple, suggesting humility and perhaps poverty. A small table stands at the head of the bed, holding what appears to be a vessel or container; its significance remains ambiguous, though it could symbolize offerings or remembrance. The background is dark and indistinct, drawing attention solely to the figures in the foreground.
Subtleties within the painting suggest layers of meaning beyond the immediate depiction of death. The careful rendering of the body’s musculature, despite its lifelessness, hints at a former vitality now extinguished. This contrast amplifies the tragedy of the scene. The mourners posture and expression evoke empathy in the viewer, inviting contemplation on themes of suffering, sacrifice, and mortality. The overall effect is one of quiet solemnity, prompting reflection on the fragility of human existence and the enduring power of grief.
