Across the blue, round snow,
Wise men ride on donkeys,
Believing in the transparent light
Of a star – incomprehensible, alas.
Others hurry on camels,
The vastness shimmers with silence.
The star, leading everyone, foretells a miracle
In real, earthly
Everyday life, and the snow twinkles brightly
And abundantly.
It was cold and difficult for us
Under the power of the enemy.
We all go to Christ, to the cave,
To the light beneath the starlight.
And me? Even me? I dont believe,
I am small, unworthy! – and you.

The womans posture conveys reverence mixed with longing; her gaze is directed upwards toward the male figure, her hands clasped in supplication. She wears a richly textured garment of gold and red hues, which contrasts sharply with the blue cloth draped around the man’s waist and shoulders. The fabric falls loosely, emphasizing his muscular form.
Behind them, the landscape recedes into a hazy distance, punctuated by a large tree trunk that serves as a visual anchor on the right side. Scattered at the base of this tree are several objects – what appear to be bread loaves and a container – adding an element of narrative ambiguity. The sky is overcast, contributing to a somber atmosphere.
The artist’s use of light is significant; it illuminates the figures faces and bodies, highlighting their emotional states while leaving much of the background in shadow. This contrast directs the viewers attention towards the interaction between the two central characters.
Subtleties within the scene suggest a complex interplay of power and desire. The man’s gesture implies an attempt to prevent physical contact, hinting at a boundary being enforced. The woman’s yearning gaze suggests a deep emotional connection that is simultaneously acknowledged and denied. The discarded objects near the tree might symbolize sustenance or provision, potentially alluding to themes of sacrifice or divine grace. Overall, the painting explores notions of restraint, longing, and the delicate balance between spiritual aspiration and earthly desire.
